Abbey Hey Match Report

Disappointment for Stockport Town as Abbey Hey win 4-1 at the Abbey Stadium.

Heading into this match The Lions were looking to get back to winning ways after a loss to Colne in the league.

Meanwhile, The Red Rebels were looking to end a three-match losing streak and improve their defence after conceding 11 goals from the last three.

Not long into the match, in the fourth minute Abbey Hey crossed the ball into Town’s box, the ball ended up coming to Henderson who was able to put it in the back of the net giving the hosts the lead.

Only two minutes later, the ball found it's way to Ankers who calmly chipped the ball into the goal and gave Abbey Hey a two-goal lead.

In the fifteenth minute, a free kick was awarded to the Red Rebels just outside Town’s box, the free kick ended up hitting the crossbar but rebounded into the direction of Henderson, who headed it into the back of the net making it 3-0 for Abbey Hey and grabbing his second of the match.

The Lions made a first half attacking substitute to try and get a foothold in the game. Edos Oni was subbed off and Omokua comes off the bench.

The sub was impactful as Town started to get more chances through the rest of the half.

Confusion arose around the 37th minute as Abbey Hey believed that they had scored a fourth but it was eventually given as offside. The referee and linesman had a quick chat and awarded a 4th goal for Abbey Hey. While the hosts celebrated the ref suddenly changed his decision again and gave it as offside, this allowed Town to start a counterattack and attacked whilst Abbey Hey were celebrating.

A couple of substitutes were made by Stockport Town at the start of the second half as both Padden and Depeiaza came off for Johnston and Lewis.

Not long into the second half, Sango received the ball in the box and with just his touch, he sends the ball into the back of the net making it 4-0 for Abbey Hey.

After the fourth goal, Town tried nonstop to get a goal back but the hosts were able to defend well enough to keep their four goal lead.

Then in the 65th minute from a corner, Johnston at the far post was able to get on the end of corner kick and chest the ball in to the back of the net.

Tensions continued to build as Town were looking for another three goals and Abbey Hey were looking to extend their lead back to four goals. Fouls were now becoming more commonly during the game and the referee was kept busy.

A good chance for substitute Harley Monaghan fell Town’s way as he was sent clear on goal only for the Abbey Hey Goalkeeper to make a good save and deny Town a second goal.

In the 87th minute, the referee brandished a straight red card for Callum Gardner for an alleged dangerous tackle.

The match eventually came to an end and both sides shook hands while heading back to the dressing room with the final score being 4-1 to the hosts.

Stockport Town’s next match is on Monday 18th against Droylsden in the Macron Cup at Stockport Sports Village.
