AFC Liverpool Match Report

Stockport Town 2-1 AFC Liverpool Match Report

By Ross Lunt

Stockport Town snatch all three points away from AFC Liverpool in the dying moments of Yesterday’s North West Counties Premier Division Match.

The Lions left it late to snatch a win from The Little Reds hands in a heated but wet clash in the NWCFL Premier Division.

Heading into this match both teams were looking to end a three-match losing streak and push themselves up the table. Town’s last league match ended in a 4-1 loss away from home against their neighbours Abbey Hey. AFC’s last league match ended in a 3-1 loss at home against Litherland REMYCA.

For the first 20 minutes, both sides had plenty of chances to take the lead but great defending from both sides kept the match level however, AFC had the better chances throughout. In the 16th minute a well placed cross heading into Town’s box finds the head of a AFC player but the shot goes wide and a goal kick for Town.

In the 19th minute, Depeiaza had a run on the left hand side of the pitch but he was taken out in a nasty challenge by AFC and left injured. Lucky he was able to get back up and continue playing after a quick check by James McDowell, Town’s physio. Surprisingly for everyone, no free kick was awarded for Town and no card show to the AFC Liverpool player.

Out of nowhere in the 29th minute, Cunningham made a run from AFC’s defence, before playing a pass to Bavelock who span round and took a shot from outside the box. The shot flies straight past Schofield and into the back of the net making it 1-0 to the away side.

After that goal for rest of the first half both sides traded chances and in the 36th minute AFC received the first booking of the game as Taylor kicks the ball away.

Just before half time Town had one of the best chances, they had the entire half as a well-placed header by Player/Manager Paul Turnbull which is brilliantly saved on the line by Parkinson keeping 1-0 AFC Liverpool.

In the 56th minute, Town received their first booking of the match as Walker fails to get the ball off AFC and takes down the player instead. The freekick given for that foul almost finds the back of the net but another great save from Schofield keeps it 1-0 to AFC Liverpool.

Town made a couple of subs in the 59th and 60th minute as Walker and Depeiaza come off for Harvey and Omokua. After these subs Town started to have more control of the match and started having more and more chances, as it was attack against defense.

In the 75th minute, The Little Reds were forced to make a change as one of their players was too injured to continue and just a minute later, Town made another sub which saw Monaghan come off for Seidenari.

In the 82nd minute, one of AFC’s coaching staff received a booking from the Match Referee Joshua Cliffe.

In the 87th minute Omokua received a booking making it the fourth booking of the match and Town’s second of the match. Two minutes later in the 89th minute the lively Omokua scored the equaliser, with a brilliant right foot shot that beat the AFC Liverpool keeper, Town’s celebrations were limited and they were straight back for the kick off as they pushed for a winner.

With six minutes added on both sides were looking for the win. Not long later in the 91st minute, Omokua received the ball just outside the box with no AFC defender marking him, he took his chance and shot at Parkinson’s near post and scored putting Town in the lead and sending players and management staff into wild celebrations.

It wasn’t Town’s last chance though, as Dan McLaughlin had a great chance to make it 3-1 and seal the points but his goal bound effort went over the bar.

One last change for Town came in the 95th minute with Barugh coming off for Fligg.

That would be the end of an entertaining game as Town recorded another home win and picked up a vital 3 points to push them into 7th place.

Stockport Town’s next match is on Saturday 30th November, away from home against West Didsbury & Chorlton at the Step Places Stadium in Chorlton.
