Match Report. Colne (A). 15/2/25

Stockport Town return to winning ways after a dominate 2-0 win away from home against Bottom of the table Colne FC on Saturday

The Lions take all three points home with goals from Jack Atkinson and Darren Ehimamiegho making it 2-0 against struggling Colne.

Prior to this match, The Lions were looking to end a three-match winless streak which saw two losses and one draw against Bury, Irlam and Squires Gate. Meanwhile, The Reds were looking to push themselves away from the relegation zone and off bottom of the table.

Within the first minute, Town’s Callum Gardner was able to push through the hosts defence and have a shot, but it just went wide. A great attacking start for The Lions.

Not long later Josh Schofield was forced to make a save off the line as Jude Entwistles header almost found the back of the net.

In the seventh minute, Adaw Owens long throw is cleared right into the path of Gardner who had another shot but his effort clears the Colne bar and goes out for a goal kick to the hosts.

Colne were forced to make their first change as Debutant Joe Pennington was injured and replaced by Matty Argent-Barnes shortly into the first half.

With the Reds struggling in the attacking third, The Lions kept pushing for that opener and in the 19th minute, a corner from Gardner is cleared away to Toby Green whose shot is blocked. Town claimed there was a handball, but the referee waved away the claims and play continued.

Just three minutes later Town had another chance as the ball is won back in Colne’s half and Marcus Kouam had a shot from 20 yards out, but Harry Turner in the Colne goal was able to collect the long range effort.

In the 28th minute, Ehimamiegho brought the ball down brilliantly and plays it through the Colne defence to Atkinson, who’s shot fires straight past the keeper into the right hand corner of the goal and made it 1-0 to Town. A deserved lead for The Lions.

Not long after the goal, Ehimamiegho once again troubled the Colne backline as he capitalises on a defencive mistake, and he slots the ball into an empty net making it 2-0 to Town.

Town controlled the game well and the referee brought an end to the first half with the score Colne 0-2 Stockport Town.

In the 54th minute, Colne have a chance to get a goal back, but the shot goes well wide of Schofields goal.

Just three minutes later, Harley Monaghan played the ball through into Kouam who is able to have a shot, but it goes into the side netting. Another energetic start to the second half for Town.

Town continued to have more chances as Ethan Padden is able to get a pass off to Green who cuts in to the box and have a shot, but it whistled just wide.

Just after that chance, Town decided to make their first change. This saw Kouam come off for Collins Kagame.

The game was a battle in midfield at this point and controlled well by Town who made a second change. This saw Gardner come off for Jamie Walsh.

Heading into the 70th minute, Town made a third change. This saw Keane Barugh come on for Toby Green. Another good performance by Toby Green

In the 78th minute, Ehimamiegho is able to flick the ball on to Kagame whose shot curls over the bar and out for a goal kick.

After that, Ehimamiegho was replaced by Sam Hare. As Town look to control the game and see it out for a vital 3 points, to continue the excellent away form.

Nearing the end of the game, Josh Schofield received the first yellow card of the game for delaying the restart.

In the 89th minute, Colne had a chance to get a goal back at the very end of the game, but the shot flew over the bar and after that Monaghan was replaced by Kylan Depeiaza.

Eventually, the game came to an end with The Lions taking home all three points and a clean sheet. With this result Town jumped back up into ninth place and ten points outside the playoffs while The Reds remain in 24th place but still a point away from safety.

Stockport Town’s next match is away at Barnoldswick Town on the 22nd of February.
