Stockport Town 2–2 Squires Gate

Stockport Town draw 2-2 against Squires Gate at Stockport Sports Village.

The Lions almost pulled off a second half comeback through Two goals by Toby Green but a late 87th minute equaliser by Gate saw the points shared between the two sides.

Prior to this game, Town were looking to get back to winning ways after two back to back loses at home to Irlam and Bury. Meanwhile, for Squires Gate, they were looking to get themselves away from bottom of the table and the relegation zone.

Not long into the first half, a well placed cross was put into the box by Jack Atkinson, finding Dan McLaughlin but his header ended up going into the hands of Nathan Pennington.

Just a minute after Town’s chance, Squires Gate had their own chance to take the lead as the ball was sent over the top and into striker Dean Ing but he was called offside before he could have a shot on goal.

In the 6th minute, Harrison Lomakin-Rogers attempted an ambitious overhead kick, but his shot goes wide of the Squires Gate goal.

Town were attacking now at every chance and were creating some good chances but couldnt put the boal in the back of the net.

In the 11th minute, Green received the ball and has a shot on goal, and it goes straight at Pennington who can only parry the ball into the path of Ethan Padden who shoots into the ground and it bounces over the bar and out for a Squires Gate goal kick.

In the 20th minute, the lively Charlie Cox had a left wing shot it is saved by Captain Josh Schofield but it finds its way to Jack Coop who puts the ball into the back of the net, putting Squires Gate in the lead.

At the start of the second half, Town made two changes. These changes saw Keane Barugh and Paul Turnbull come off for Callum Gardner and Jamie Walsh.

In the 53rd minute, Walsh ran past most of the Squires Gate side before sending the ball into Harley Monaghan but his shot is well saved by Pennington in the Gate goal.

Just two minutes later and Toby Green scored an amazing equaliser, as he skipped past 5 Squires Gate players before rifling Town's equaliser into the net.

The Lions were really pressuring Squires Gate as they went on the hunt for another goal. Not long after the Green goal, Walsh had a shot from 30 yards which the busy Pennington managed to palm away for a corner.

From the corner, the ball goes into the box and lands for Green who sent the ball right into the back of the net making it 2-1 to Town. It was a great start to the second half for The Lions.

In the 64th minute, Town made their third change of the day. This saw Darren Ehimamegho coming on for Dan McLaughlin.

In the 70th minute, Squires Gate decided to make a few changes. This saw Josh Edwards and Jack Coop come off for Rowan Chambers and Saad Mekkaoui-Abouzaid.

Just three minutes later, Chambers and Padden both go for the ball in a 50/50 challenge, and it ends up with Chambers receiving the first booking of the game and physio James McDowell attending to the injured Ethan Padden.

Town made one last change which saw Kylan Depeiaza come on for Green.

Not long after the sub, Squires Gate Left Back Charlie Cox danced past a couple of Town players before laying off for James Hughes who curled past Josh Schofield to make it 2-2 in the 86th minute.

With only three minutes left of the game, Squires Gate broke free but Lomakin-Rogers halts the attack. The referee awarded the away side a free kick but was unsure of the Town player who committed the offence.

After a discussion with the Assistant Referee, Charlie O’Brien was sent off. The free kick from the foul was the last bit of action for the match.

This result saw Town jump up to 10th while Squires Gate would move up a place to 23rd place and tied on points with Prestwich Heys who are outside the relegation zone.

Stockport Towns next match is on the 15th of March against Colne away from home.
